Our Background

Working to put the needs of People First.

Simba began life as a subsidiary of the Simba Project but in 1995 it was registered as a standalone housing association with the express aim of providing a range of affordable housing options and services to people, primarily from the African and African-Caribbean community, in housing need.
Our Mission

What We Stand For

We aim to provide diverse range of affordable accommodation to those in housing need, primarily from the African/African-Caribbean community. Furthermore, to provide the best possible services geared to the needs of the tenants.

Work in partnership with housing providers and the London Borough of Greenwich in the strategies to ensure development of viable black-led Housing Associations.

Work closely with the London Borough of Greenwich and other major social housing providers in meeting the housing needs of the community in general and the African-Caribbean community in particular.

R

Continue to provide Housing Plus range of services in meeting the culturally sensitive needs of the Simba Community with special emphasis on Supported Housing.

What We Do

The Work We Do

We believe that Simba plays a vital role by providing an essential link between mainstream housing providers and enablers and the community we serve in south east London. In essence, the fact that we are part of the very community we serve ensures that our services closely match the needs of our tenants. Our desire to meet the needs of the community means that we offer much more than a roof over the head – with a special emphasis on culturally sensitive supported housing. Much of our effort is directed at supporting people so that, in time, they can move on into mainstream housing.

Working Partnership

We work closely with local authorities, including the London Borough of Greenwich, to help ensure the delivery of a diverse and equitable housing service. We also work closely with mainstream housing associations who share our desire to see healthy and vibrant black-led associations operating within their communities.

General Needs Housing

In addition to our supported housing, we also provide a number of general needs homes, some of which are short-life, for our community. There is always pressure on these homes and we welcome partnership working with mainstream housing associations who would benefit from assistance.

Supported Shared Housing

With funding from the supporting people regime, we provide shared housing with support for young single homeless African and African-Caribbean people in the Borough of Greenwich.
Our accommodation, let on an assured short hold tenancy, is either in houses with shared communal facilities or self-contained flats. To ensure that tenants gain the most they can from their new start, we provide tailored support plans and regular review sessions.
Tenants can benefit from access to training, benefit advice, job search, budgeting and household skills. But our role doesn’t end there. The aim is always to help the young person into longer-term accommodation once they are ready to strike out on their own.

Summary

Simba Housing Association plays a significant role in the lives of many African and African Caribbean people in need of more than simply housing.

We know that we face tough challenges, particularly in relation to supporting people funding regimes where we cannot and will not compete on price with the larger providers. But, we know that we more than compete in terms of providing a tailored, localised and specialist service which complements both the community cohesion and place to live agendas. Combine this with our drive to continually improve our services by putting the tenants at the heart of everything we do and Simba Housing Association is well-placed to meet the increasing housing and support needs of our communities

“I came to Simba Housing Association desolate and lonely with a lot of issues in my life, I really needed help to sort myself out. I was offered accommodation with support in a girls only house.
Things were a bit rocky at the start but after my initial assessment meeting my support worker reassured me that Simba would do anything to see me through my ordeal. I had access to my key worker 24 hours a day. Well, that was two years ago, after much encouragement to educate myself I got into college and have now been enrolled at Kingston University to study nursing. I am so proud of Simba Housing for being there for me when no-one else wanted to know.
As if that was not enough good news Simba HA referred me to the London Borough of Greenwich and I have now been given a beautiful flat and Simba is providing support for the next 12 weeks to help me settle in.”
